Jazz music playing

2002-09-30 by marcuselke

hey folks,

i'm new here and thinking of buying the DTXpress since i live in a
apartment. Any thoughts on this set for jazz music as far as
sensitivity and nuances...?
By the way, i also appreciate all the input on this board its helping
to make a decision. ALSO, i live in Germany and can only find the
DTXpress not DTXpress II and the best price i'm finding is $800.00
USED, this seems steep for a first generation used set, what do you
think?

thanks!

That seems a couple hundred dollars too much for a
used kit, especially with the 2nd version out now. As
far as jazz goes you need to sit down at the kit and
fiddle with it to make your decision. It is a pretty
sensitive drumkit but the thing is its electric, not
acoustic. Its a different feel all together, you need
to sit down at the kit and see if it suits you taste
at all, you may love it or hate it. That's my best
advice. i hope this helps. -Joe

P.S. I have trouble playing straight jazz on it
unless I use acoustic cymbals, which kinda defeats the
purpose of why most people buy electric drums (for
silent practice).

If you live in Germany this is the place to be (may not be in the
neighbourhood, but they also have a mail-order service). Muzik-
productif. This is the single biggest music store in Europe. I live
in the Netherlands and lots of people I know go there to buy their
instruments. See: www.musik-productiv.de (this url might be wrong. If
it is i'll post the correct one) If I remember correctly, the
DTXPress 2 costs about 1039 euro.

Good luck, (und viel Spaß mit der DTXPress ;-))

I am a jazz drummer, and I have used the DTXpress since it first came out for practicing. I have found it to be an incredible tool for practice, and immensely helpful when it comes to the neighbors, but I would never take it to a jazz gig - it just doesn't have the dynamic range that a jazz player needs. However, I constantly plug in jazz CD's and practice along on the DTX, and I constantly work out everything I'm going to do live on the DTX. I have found it to be a great simulator when it comes to preparing for live gigs. If I were playing hip hop or funk I would consider in a live situation, but not for jazz.
