Review and RE-View.

Review and RE-View.

2002-12-21 by hairytrigger <artifax@internetcds.com>

Hi, all. Just a short note re TP80S. I have really disparaged this pad
on this forum. I recently decided to try again. I got one at guitar
center for less than 30 bucks. It works great. I have it hooked to the
HiHat input. Now I can get a more slightly open sound from the rim,
just like the edge of real hihats.Well, maybe not "just like". But it
works great. I also got a PD-7. It too works great. It is a little
different, but still good.
I also tried the DTXpress II for the first time. WOW. I was quite
impressed with the response of the 3-zone snare pad. Didn't have to
coax it at all. It was truly a fine pad.
Now. ... I have been playing the pintech concertcast mesh pad for
snare. I just got the Pintech ax14. I have not tried it yet.( I have
to wait till Christmas!!!)I will review as soon as I can.
I also scored a used Roland TD-5 module on Ebay.Much more limited in
number of sounds, but it will allow me to expand my kit. I can now
have rim function on snare without losing the extra cymbal,
accessory(cowbell, handclap) pad, etc. This is getting good.

Hi Scott,

Look forward to your review of the AX14S. I'll bet you're going to
like it a lot. Aside from the size advantage and its ability to
track voices cleanly, because it's isolated on a separate stand, you
don't have to fuss with rejection parameters or minumum velocity to
eliminate crosstalk. Even self-rejection can be really low. I
programmed my mv at 1 and sj at 2 (mask time of 1 is too short),
which allows for wide dynamics and soft pressed rolls near the rim,
almost as though you had positional sensing. There's a bit of a hot
spot above the trigger, which is unavoidable, but that's where most
of the playing happens anyway. I'll be interested to find out what
you use for trigger and pad type. Mine are at DT10/20 and DT snare;
I program all my mesh heads as if they were triggered acoustic drums
(and I keep all my DIP switches on the back of the module in the up
position.)

As promised, Here is my assesment of my new Pintech AK14S. It is
awesome! The look and feel, the sensitivity. And great separation on
the head and rim triggers.I always knew I needed something a little
larger than the 10" Concertcast, but the difference is astounding. I
absolutely love it!
I tried the concertcast for a tom, but I really like rubber pads for
toms.
I have worked in the Roland TD-5 module, for extra sounds.
Here is a question. I don't have the manual for the TD-5. All I have
is the Turbo-Start guide. Not very comprehensive. I was wondering if
anyone knows how to set things up so I can use the pads plugged in to
the TD-5 to trigger sounds from the DTXPress. Right now I'm using the
TD-5 for an extra crash, as well as a second ride for bell. It would
be great to access the DTXPress sounds. Any Ideas.Or anybody know
where I can get a copy of the full TD-5 Manual? I'll pay!!!!

Scott,

Not surprised that you like it so much. If you come up with some
interesting settings, let us know. As for the TD5 manual, you can
call Roland at 1-323-890-3700 between the hours of 8:30am and 5pm
PST. That's the expensive route. Another way is to join the VDrum
forum at VDrums.com and ask around.
