Expanding DTXII....Expansion Module

Expanding DTXII....Expansion Module

2003-01-23 by jadiebooshkie <jadiebooshkie@yahoo.com>

I know this was asked before, but I can't find the thread related to
it. I would like to add more drum pads and cymbal pads. Can an
expansion module be used for this. I understand Roland makes an
expansion module, would this work with the Yamaha module...have any
of you folks out there tried this? I would like your valued
opinions on this, and what I would need to add on to my system. I
want to add 1 or 2 more drums and 1 or 2 more cymbals. Also, would
I be able to mount an expansion module to the Yamaha drum rack that
is standard for DTXII, where it would be next to the DTX
module...or would I have to replace my rack with a
Gibraltar? I know these are ALOTTA questions, but I feel I can get
the answers from you guys....thanks for your input!

The current Roland TMC-6 will add 6 inputs to the DTXII for
something between $220 and $300 new. Besides price, the drawback to
this unit, however, may be that it offers features that are useless
for those with the DTXII (for instance, compatibility with Roland's
three-zone cymbals; Yamaha does not yet have an equivalent, though
one may be forthcoming). Ed Morin at Drumbalaya has it at a good
price ($219, I think). The Roland PM-16 is a discontinued unit that
adds 16 separate triggers for at least $100 less when you can find
it. The also discontinued Kat midiKITI offers 9 inputs usually for
less than $100 used. I believe that both are available now on ebay.

The decision may depend, in part, on what kind of cymbals or pads
you want to add. The TMC-6, I believe, handles mono, stereo, dual-
zone, and more. The PM-16 and midiKITI are just mono, thereby also
handling dual-zones as well. But they allow advanced sound stacking
(better than the DTXII) and other desirable trigger parameters. All
of these interfaces are mountable, but it will take some creative
expansion to fit everything intended on the DTXII rack. If you
follow through with the addition of 1 or 2 cymbals, 1 or 2 pads,
plus an external trigger interface, you may need a new rack. Ed
Morin can help with that, too.
