Anyone know of, or had any experience with, the Alesis D4? Just
curious as to how good the thing is

Brett,

Peter Hart's review of it is a good starting point (go to
hartdynamics.com and click on modules on the list to the left). The
D4 doesn't have the wealth of user parameters that the Yamaha has;
it doesn't do hi hat half as well or have stereo inputs. For DTX
users, it might be a good second module, but it wouldn't be in the
same league as the primary one.

I have a D4 that I use on my electronic kit. As has
been stated previously, it doesn't have all of the
bells and whistles of newer modules. You can download
the user's manual in PDF format from Alesis.com under
Support. That should give you an idea of the module's
capabilities. The D4 can only work with 20
pre-defined kits -- in practice I have found about 4
of them are worth using -- the rest are just too weird
for the stuff I play. It has a bunch of pre-recorded
sounds and you can alter the pre-defined kits, but a
lot of the sounds really aren't that great. My
BIGGEST complaint is the lack of backlit display --
you need a flashlight in dim lighting to see the
screen to change kits.

If you can get a D4 for $100 or less -- get it. It
will make a good back-up or you can use it with your
acoustic kit to help fatten up your drum sounds.
Don't make it your primary module -- it is a solid
reliable performer, but is lacking in a variety of
sounds and settings that you will find on other
modules.
