DTXTREME review question

DTXTREME review question

2003-03-30 by underneathheaven

At the hart dynamics website I looked up the review of the DTXtreme
module and it only gave the module a 3 (out of five I guess?) and
said the module had poor sound quality and slow inaccurate
triggering. Is any of this true? I have heard lots of good things
about the dtxtreme so I was suprised to see this bad review. The
dtxpressII got a 3.5 so I was wondering if anyone could deny this
review. Thanks!

Hi UNH,

Walt might have something to say about that. But Peter Hart wrote
that review quite a while ago. It's no secret that at least some of
Hart's equipment doesn't mate well with Yamaha, which might have
something to do with the review. By the way, Ed Shaughnessy is truly
amazing--one of the serious pioneer double bassists. He was the
drummer for the Tonight Show during the Johnny Carson era.

Hi UNH,

One thing that has been very clear over the years is that some people
prefer Yamaha's sounds, while other's prefer Rolands. I don't think
there is one right answer - both have their good and bad attributes.

Hart, being a copmany that does not make modules, has incorporated
something in their trigger designs that seems to cause triggering
issues with Yamaha modules. There is another vendor that heard their
products were having problems working properly with Yamaha modules,
and they choose to work with Yamaha users to correct the issues.
Hart (as far as I know) has taken a different approach, which seems
to be that they do not think the Yamaha market is where they want to
focus their efforts. Given that, would you expect their web site to
endorse Yamaha products very highly?

Jim,

I think Walt might be referring to Visulite.

Hi Jim,

Ed is right, the folks at Visulite now offer their HH setup in a
Yamaha compatable version. Why, because Ed and Jade and others liked
the way the Visulite cymbals worked and asked Tom @ Visulite if their
HHs could be made to work as well. Tom got the Yamaha components he
needed to figure out how the trigger interface of the Yamahas worked,
and modified his design to work with them. Truth be told, Ed and I
are in the process of giving them a test drive (Ed has his, but is in
the midst of a rack swap, mine should have been mailed out today)to
see how Tom did. If we need to tweek them a little more, Tom will be
right there for us.

In past dealings with other vendors, they have not even had Yamaha
modules to test with, nor have they seemed motivated enough by the
reports of problems with their triggers not working well to go get
one. I know I have what some in the group would call Senior
Moments, but on this topic I think I can figure out where I want to
spend my money all by myself.

PS - I know where there will most likely be a set of Hart HHs and
maybe a Hart dual zone ride going up for sale soon...(quit laughing Ed)
