User Manual / Cross Talk / Bass Drum

User Manual / Cross Talk / Bass Drum

2003-04-05 by I'll tell friends.

Hello all. I just bought a DTXpress on Ebay. Any ideas where I can
get a manual? I have the basics pretty much figured out, but I know
I'm missing stuff.

Also, by messing with the settings I somehow made the crash so
sensitive it crashes whenever I hit the other pads, does this sound
possible?

Finally, can I put a mesh head on an 18" bass drum and trigger it? I
don't really like the Yamaha bass pad, and think the 18" would look
cool (also I want to use a double pedal).

I'm new to the edrums world and have been hacking through the
previous posts but thought you all could give me some insight to my
most immediate concerns.

Thanks,

Jon

Once you have Acrobat Reader installed, you can print the manuals.

Hello, Jon, and welcome to the group. You've found a
great source for all kinds of information. I'm
somewhat new to E-Drums myself, but I will answer what
I can.
As far as the manual is concerned, there is a link to
the manual in this user group under the "files"
section. Just print one off, or save a copy on your
PC for easy access.
Considering you bought your kit of Ebay, more than
likely it's been tweaked like there's no tomorrow.
First thing I would do is a factory. If you've
already thought that one out, how far away from your
pads are your cymbal pads? You'll find quite a few
topics on rejection settings in here, but there's no
definitive answer on your particular set-up. It will
just take tweaking.
Now the cool stuff. You can keep your bass drum by
attaching a bass drum triggering device to it. Most
music shops on the net that are worth a damn seem to
carry what you'll need. There seems to be some
favorites amongst this motley crue of mad drummers
such as drumbalaya.com, midwestpercussion.com, and
americanmusicsupply.com that lets you do payments if
over a certain amount of money is spent. I haven't
tried any d drum triggers of the likes to know how
well they respond, but I'm sure somebody here has some
knowledge of them. Just be patient for a response,
somebody will say something before long. Usually this
group is lightning fast with a response.
Hope I was able to answer some questions for you. If
not, drop another line. We'll work it out.
Welcome to the group again!

Brett

Hi Jon,

Welcome. I'd do a factory reset, as Brett suggested, first thing,
before you've invested much time in programming your own kits. Check
out the manual for the procedure, as well as for a crash course (pun
intended) on rejection, specific rejection, and self-rejection. The
manual isn't always terribly informative, but it's a start. Chances
are that you raised the gain on the crash, thereby making it more
susceptible to vibrations or crosstalk, transmitted along the rack.
The easy answer would be that you need to increase the crash's
rejection setting until the problem goes away, but that would be to
ignore the need to maintain a global balance between all of the
trigger settings. The higher a pad's gain, and the lower its minimum
velocity, the more likely it is to trigger falsely. Simply
increasing rejection settings would be asking for trouble; rejection
mutes a trigger for a micro-second when other events of certain
force occur. Minute as that interval is, it's best to have these
settings as low as possible. Reset and learn a little about the
trigger menu. Your crosstalk should automatically reduce for the
time being. As you continue to tinker, it may come back, but we'll
be able to fix it.

As for the bass drum, if you can find an 18" mesh head, you can
certainly put in on an acoustic kick and trigger it. You'd probably
be well advised to use a Yamaha trigger, or something that is known
to be its equivalent. The ddrum triggers have proven to be
problematical with the module. If what you got with your kit was the
old KP60 kick tower, your quick disenchantment with it is
understandable. The new KP65, however, will take a double pedal, as
will certain models from Pintech, Roland, Drumtech, etc, which
respond much like acoustics. Plus, any of them would be far less
ungainly than a full sized bass drum. We can be more specific with
recommendations if you want them. Talk to you later.
