Problems and I don't know why

Problems and I don't know why

2003-04-04 by Roy D Carlson

I purchased a Yamaha DTXpress drum kit and module a while back. I've
started on a new album, and decided that I'd hook the drum module up
direct to my DIGI001 (Protools) system via MIDI. I've not recorded
the drums on this with MIDI yet, only analog. Anyway, I create a
track in Protools, select channel 10 as my output channel, and start
scripting in my stuff. Everything goes fine. Now, I also have a
sound module MIDI'd into my system that I use to give me piano,
string, etc, and I have two other MIDI tracks put down. After making
my drum track, I play the song. The drums play fine, and the other
midi tracks play fine...except the DTXPRESS is not only playing on
channel 10, but it's also playing stuff on channel 2, and if I change
to different songs on the DTXPRESS, it'll just to different
channels. I've gone through all the setting I know to look at, and I
don't see anywhere how to disable other MIDI channels. I've read the
book, and it briefly describes how to enable channel 10, but that's
about it. I've varied every MIDI setting on the unit to see if the
problem will go away, but it doesn't. Shoot, i don't even want the
songs enabled. I don't use prerecorded beats. It appears to be
playing MIDI from these songs that are tied into my selected kit.
What am I missing here? Can someone enlighten me? Thanks Roy

Hello Roy,
Have you set the tracks coming out of protools to the Digi001 because
then you could be getting the sounds comining in from the sound module
out from the digi to the DTXpress and then back into protools. You
could just correct the output of these tracks and everything should be
fine.

Cya,
Riccardo

P.S. by the way do you like the DIGI 001? I have been using it for
quite a while and I think it is a great sound card. What are other
people out there using?

Well, I think I know what you're asking. So yes would be the
answer. I can actually mute the MIDI tracks in pro tools
controlling the Korg sound module, and the DTXpress will stop
playing on those tracks too. Then it just plays on channel 10. So
somehow when Protools is outputting midi signal to channels 1,2, and
10, the DTXpress is under the impression that it's supposed to play
on 1 and 2. Now, I can actually turn on channel 10 on the korg, and
it'll play with the DTXpress, but I ofcourse shut that off quite
easily. so I figure that the DTXpress is allowing channels 1 and 2
to receive signal, and in turn it plays sounds based on the song
that's linked to the kit I select. I can change to different songs,
and the sounds it plays on those channels changes.

I absolutly LOVE the digi001. I've got a monster PC computer (and I
use an athlon xp processor), and I've got two monitors tied in. I
can have the mix window on one monitor and the edit window on the
other, and I don't ever have to switch between. That was the best
thing I've done yet. Protools is the greatest too, although it's
MIDI capabilities are limited. It's analog stuff is the bomb! the
only thing is that I wish plug-ins were just a little cheaper.

Ok, silly question, but is your DTXpress in OMIN mode? If so it would
play process all MIDI info on all channels and make a bunch of noise when
it's not supposed to.... :)
