Can you remind us all of this MIDI problem again? You
say it's just coming through as piano? Please remind
me of your setup as it's been that long...

BTW. How many gigs have you played with the DTXpress
now? Any comments?

The Midi problem is that when I connect up to the band sequencer, and playback a session we just recorded, the drum pattern plays back through the DTXpress as piano notes, instead of drum notes, despite my best efforts to counteract it. The problem is quickly solved, various set-up options need to be changed, I forget which, but the brain still reverts to piano if you stop and start the sequencer again without any change to the parameters!! It can be cured by moving a parameter away from the desired one and back again, like channel instrument number or changing between Meldy and Drum (you know what I mean)

As for live work, well, the band I was using it in went real quiet on me, we all kind of felt it wasn't working out. I guess they figured I was right when they first asked me to play with them, when I said my style wasn't realy in keeping with their music. Anyway, I tried to contact them, but no luck, now I notice they are doing another gig without me, oh well, no hard feelings, just wish they'd be mature enough to let me know!

So sorry Giles, no more live news, but it sounds like some of the other guys here are working it all out.

Good to see this board back in action.

Just a quickie - what sequencer and what channel
numbers are using?

BTW - I had to supress a giggle about your band
situation - I had visions of you on stage in front of
a few hundred people - first song - and out pops a
weird piano melody from the back. Everyone turns
around "What the f***?" I'm sure it didn't happen like
that - but that would have been hilarious.

BBTW - Saw LeftField at Glastonbury on the TV. During
close ups of the drummer I could have sworn I saw some
DTX pads on his kit. Also heard one of the preset
sounds in the song, too. I quite like LeftField, but
their "live" act was pre-programmed and dull. Still,
top marks for using the DTX.

The sequencer was Cakewalk on a PC, and the chanel was 10, usually reserved for drums if I remember, and yes those situations would have been nightmares.

BTW - The DTX pads are very similar to Yamaha's standard electronic single and dual zone pads, many top line pro's are sponsord to use yamaha kit.

You're right about Channel 10, it's usually reserved
for the soundcard ROM drums - although if you use
SoundFont kits, you can use any channel.
The most important thing to do next is to get the MIDI
line analyzer set up. I've put one in the Files
section in Utilities. This will show you exactly
what's coming into the sequencer from the DTXpress.
Set the input of the analyzer to MIDI In and the
output to your MIDI Output port or the Mapper (so you
can hear it)
If you hit a pad, you'll see Note On - Velocity -
Pitch and Note Off messages. If you change the kit on
the brain, you'll see Program Change messages.

Now go through the steps it takes to recreate your
Piano problem. What do you see on the monitor?

Either the DTXpress will be kicking out something it
shouldn't or Cakewalk is mapping channel 10
incorrectly. Either way, if we find out what - we can
fix it.
