VisuLite HiHat Question

VisuLite HiHat Question

2003-04-20 by Jade

Ed,
I viewed the files you posted in the group. I see you
have an insert cable...it looke like a Hosa
YPP-117...is it like the same one needed for the
Visulite Ride? Also....what type of HH stand do you
suggest...Walt has the kind with a rotating base. I
was looking to get a stand that is compact in
size...like maybe with 2 legs...my kit is in my
computer room, and this is a VERY SMALL ROOM...I am
looking to conserve space-do ya think I could find one
that will work with my space limitations. Also...have
ya found any thing that needs tweaking on the HHs?
Jade

Hi Jade,

Hope you'll be having a good holiday. Glad I saw your message
tonight. The insert cable is for the hi hat cymbal; just like the
ride, it is for bell and bow (Tom also makes a single-zone top
cymbal). You don't need a stand with rotating legs; it can be
simple, even bottom of the line. Look for a stand with a clear line
of sight down the shaft to the pedal, and a pedal that narrows
toward the top to accept the clamp. With a little ingenuity, the
clamps should work on just about any stand, but the easiest, and
most obvious, way is to clamp the controller to the shaft and the
hook to the pedal directly below it. You'll notice that the hook in
my photo is actually clamped to the chain just above the pedal. The
Pearl stand's pedal is too wide by a hair for the clamp. I have
since changed the arrangement, however, because the hook's nearly
horizontal positioning when clamped to the chain, and the location
of the leg tightening screw on the shaft, interfered slightly with
the movement of my foot and the line of the metal cord,
respectively. Thankfully, the Pearl has a small hole near the top of
the pedal through which I attached one end of the hook assembly; I
attached the other end, at a slight angle, to the corner of the
pedal. By moving the controller just off-center on the shaft, I was
able to get a nearly straight cord line from controller to pedal,
thereby avoiding the leg screw and putting the hook in a more
vertical position away from my foot. Once I finished this change,
the hat came completely to life. My only other physical tweak was to
place fabric between the top and bottom cymbals to cut down on a
clopping noise when they close.

If you hold on for a day or two, I'll look at some stands and come
up with recommendations. A few companies make compact stands that
shouldn't take up too much room. You might also send Tom an email
asking him about it. He may not answer, but no harm trying. Talk to
you later.

Jade:
A couple of companies (Ludwig, for one) make a leglass hi-hat stand
for double base drummers. You could get one of these, and using a
multi-clamp, a short piece of tubing and a rack clamp, mount it right
to the same extension that holds your snare.
I used my hi-hat like this (with the legd folded up) for one gig
where I used acoustic cymbals.

Sorry for the typos in my last post. It's late. I'm tired.
Where's my coffee?
Better yet, where's my bed?

Ed,
Hope you have a wonderful Easter with your family. I
will be waiting for you to check out some HH stands
that will work. Let me know. I will also TRY to
contact Tom, but I know how hard it is to get hold of
him.
Thanks for your help!
