Volume Aux song/ click

Volume Aux song/ click

2003-04-21 by fxsran

Hi guys,

Im a newbie here, ive had by kit for a month now and i'm down with a
problem already. I cant adjust the volume of the Aux or the click
from the brain. Everytime if i play along with the presets song the
volume seems to be too loud and drowning my kit . My Shift button on
the panel dont seem to work. i can only adjust the volume of the
snare and the kick from the panel button.. i guess i must have done
something wrong or just plain dumb..
Also I seem to have lost the choking effect on my crash cymbals.
Is there anything in the settings that i might have accidentally
turned off..
anyone care to help me out? Thanks in advance
My apologies if my questions are just too dumb..

Hi fxsran (how do you pronounce that?),

Dumb answers are what you've gotta watch out for. Here comes one
now, I think. First of all, you can't adjust the relative balance of
song and drums inside the brain, except incidentally by fiddling
with the volume of individual triggers in the voice menu or the
volume of the entire kit in the utility menu. The reason why you can
only affect the snare and kick via the knobs on the front panel now
is that you probably have the utility menu's volume control mode set
to "live" instead of "practice." If you switch the setting, the
accomp knob will take care of the song level and the click knob,
the . . . click level. Pressing the shift button while turning those
knobs in the practice setting will get you the snare and kick,
respectively. By the way, the aux volume knob controls the volume of
only an external device connected via aux input beside it. You can
find the explanation in the manual somewhere in the "About the Song"
section. Let us know if that isn't the problem.

On the choke function, the parameter "pad type" in the trigger menu
determines what kind of response you'll get from individual
triggers. You might have accidentally set the pad type for the
cymbal in question incorrectly, resulting in the loss of the choke
function. I forget which type disables the choke, but it shouldn't
take long finding out.

Ok, simple one here (all the comments by liberatusvirus are right on the
money, but I'm including this one since a) he didn't mention it and b)it
caught me!) Check to make sure you are using the Stereo patch cable! :D I
mucked up my cables when I moved from downstairs to upstairs and fiddled
with the brain for about an hour b4 i figured that one out. DOH! :)

fxsran,

I am assuming you have a DTXPRESSII. I believe (from memory) there are
three volume knobs on the front of the DtxpressII, overall volume out, click
volume, song volume and aux input volume. The song volume is adjusted by
the "Accomp Vol" knob on the front of the module. This will
increase/decrease volume of song you are playing too. The choke function is
only available on zones 2, 6 & 7 and you must use a stereo cable to connect
the pad and the pad type needs to be set for a PCY65S and not the PCY65.
Ditto, what Ed said about the "live" and "practice" mode.
Hopes this helps.

Regarding the choke function only being available on inputs 2, 6, and
7. Is this correct? Or is it that these are the inputs that have that
pad type factory selected. On the DTXpress 1, all inputs can have
choke, if pad type is set correctly. I think it is the same on the
xpressII.

Re: Volume Aux song/ click

2003-04-23 by oldguydrummer

Just to make sure I didn't miss something (since my playtime with the
set is usually between 10pm and 1am) I went back and checked. I
attached a PCY65S and then a PCY80S to zones 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 and set
the trigger and voice to the appropriate settings and choke is only
available on the three zone channels (2,6,7) and not on the stereo
zones 1,3,4,5. Which sucks, because when I had just two modules and
more PCY65s/PCY80s than I had three zone inputs, one of cymbals
didn't have choking. Kinda makes you want to go and "choke" somebody
at Yamaha, since like you said this was available on the original
DTXpress.

For those who don't have access to a DTXpressII the basic setup from
the factory is:

Zone 1 - Bass (options for setting pad and rim)
Zone 2 - Snare (options for setting pad, rim1 and rim2)
Zone 3 - Tom1 (options for setting pad and rim)
Zone 4 - Tom2 (options for setting pad and rim)
Zone 5 - Tom3 (options for setting pad and rim)
Zone 6 - Ride (options for setting pad, rim1 and rim2)
Zone 7 - Crash (options for setting pad, rim1 and rim2)
Zone 8 - HiHat (options for setting pad and rim opened, setting pad
and rim closed, plus footsplash)
Zone 9/10 - Aux (Single stereo type input jack that will take two
inputs)
HHCTL - For plugging HH65 pedal or similar.

Zones 2,6,7 are interchangable for attaching the three zone pad TP-
65s or any stereo cymbols (pad, rim, choke).

Re: Volume Aux song/ click

2003-04-23 by liberatusvirus

Hey oldguy,

Yamaha advertises three-zones all Xppress II inputs, and stereo
inputs are capable in principle of chokes, anyway. In fact, choking
is a prime function of the FSRs. I don't own one so don't kill the
messenger. Anyone?

Re: Volume Aux song/ click

OLDGUY
I still say choke is available on ALL inputs if the pad type is set
for it.... You need to set a pad type that supports choke. from the
factory 6, and 7 are set for pcy crash and ride. both support choke.

RE: [DTXpress] Re: Volume Aux song/ click

2003-04-23 by rdamon@mckinney-usa.com

Ed,

Don't worry, I never kill the messenger. I am here to learn as much about my
system as I can. And I if somebody can show me how to do something to the
module/pad to make it function different/better then I end up "winning"
because I learn something.

As far as the three-zone issue, I have noticed on some websites this has
been advertised (I believe falsely) but here are some direct quotes from the
DTXpressII manual:

"TRIGGER INPUT JACK (1 KICK-8HI HAT)
Inputs 1-8 are compatible with switch type pads while
inputs 2,6, and 7 are compatiable with 3-zone type pads."

"Trigger input jacks are all stereo input type jacks."

"It is possible to connect 3-zone type pads like the tp65S to
trigger input jacks 2 snare, 6 ride, and 7 crash"

"Trigger Inputs 1-8 (stereo phone jack-> L:trigger input, R:rim switch)"

"Trigger Inputs 9/10 (stereo phone jack -> L,R:trigger input"

"When the TP65S/sp is connected to input 2/6/7, its 3-zone function is
available
(pad X 1, rim sound X 2). If the pad is connected to any other input, the
rim
will produce only one sound."

So the three zone Pad TP65S won't produce three sounds on zones 1, 3,4,5,
but only on 2,6,7.

I as far as the other issue of choking, I will go back this weekend, when
I'm fully awake and experiment again.
I did use a stereo cable last night when I backchecked, because I assigned a
C/002 voice to the pad and a C/003 to the rim and got two sounds, which
would be impossible with a mono cable. So I am certain I didn't screw that
up. I also set the trigger input to PCY65 which is the setting for both the
PCY65/PCY65S. I started by plugging the pad into input no. 1 and no choke. I
then reset the pad type to PCY80 which is the setting for both the
PCY80/PCY80s and no choke.

I will do a more detailed investigation and connect the pads and try
multiple PCY65S/PCY80S and multiple modules to see if something is broke or
I missing something else.

I really hope you guys are right and I am wrong, because that will mean I
can have even more fun with my babies.

Hope everyone had a good Easter like I did with my family.

RE: [DTXpress] Re: Volume Aux song/ click

2003-04-23 by rdamon@mckinney-usa.com

Scott,

I as said in my other post.

I used stereo cable from PCY65S to zone 1 input.
I set the trigger input to PCY65 (used for both PCY65/PCY65S).
I set up the voice for pad to C/002 and the rim for C/003.
I got two sounds (pad=Crash, rim=crashe), but it did not choke.
I made the exact same settings to trigger/voice and moved cable from zone 1
to zone 2 and the cymbal choke.
I tried two other PCY65S cymbals and the samething happen.

I then plugged in the PCY80S and changed the trigger input to PCY80 (used
for both PCY80/PCY80S) and the same thing happened between zones 1 and 2. I
then randomly check other zones and the results were similar. I did this on
my third module, since I haven't had the time to reprogram for all the pads
that I have gotten. But did notice this problem when I got my first two
modules last September. I am going to look at it one last time this weekend
and then may call Yamaha to see what the final answer is even though I no
longer have a problem with this issue since I have the third module. All of
my stereo pads/cymbals (TP65S x2; PCY80S x3, PCY65S x6) are now snug as a
bug in the three zone input jacks or the HiHat input jack no. 8. (Two of the
PCY65S are being used for Hihats inputs.)

I hope you guys are right and I am wrong, so that next year when I beg the
wife for the fourth modules, I will have more options....well actually I
waiting for the magical PCY150 three cymbal pads that is referred to in the
manual.

Thanks,

OldGuyDrummer
