Muting output of external device possible(ie;CD's)

Muting output of external device possible(ie;CD's)

2003-06-23 by zapaxe

Hi all,

I'm using the "DTXpress I" BTW...

While playing along to a CD (or tape) as it's plugged into the AUX
IN of the DTXpress, is it possible to mute the CD's audio at the L/R
output's of this drum kit, but still hear the CD ONLY in the
headphones?

This would especially be handy while using the DTXpress for
recording. If I'm sending a source into the AUX IN and trying to
record only the drums I end up getting the AUX IN signal source
recorded as well.

I do however have a work around...Using an external mixer to send in
an AUX source signal into, the DTXpress's L/R out's & the I monitor
the mixer with phones...But it would sure make sence for the
DTXpress to be able to do that!

Sorry. I think we all been waiting for someone else to give you the
bad news. I don't think it can be done.

Sorry to ignore you there... :) Fairly unusual in this group, we're
usually so helpful it hurts... :D

As for your issue, it seems like what you're trying to do is have a *mix*
of CD and Drums in your headset but get the drum-only out the back of the
DTXpress. As far as I can tell(looking at the block diagram of the unit
in the manual), the headphones jack on the front of the unit is driven by
the L-R output on the back of the unit. Since this is the case, it is not
possible to "de-couple" the drum from the aux-in signal without doing
some warranty-voiding solder surgery... :(

However, it would seem a small mixer would do the job fairly easily and
inexpensively. Something like this:

In case the URL gets munged, just go to Musicians Friend and type
Behringer as the brand and "under $50.00" as the parameter. This mixer is
listed as follows (see attached picture):

------------------ CLIP ----------------
Eurorack UB502 5-Channel Compact Mixer

Features the same state-of-the-art Invisible Mic Pre-amp and
ultra-low-noise design (with the highest possible headroom) as its larger
brethren. One mono channel and 2 stereo channels with a 2-band EQ and
peak LED on the mono channel make it ideal for use with fixed audio
installations, keyboards, samplers, and computer applications. 5 balanced
high-headroom line inputs; main mix, headphone, and stereo tape outs;
assignable tape ins; and external power supply.

Features:

    * Ultra-low-noise design

The manual is here:

This would be a low-cost solution to what you're trying to accomplish
and, based on the size of the thing, you might be able to perch it atop
the DTXpress module to make it easy to run from your kit.... :)

Re: Muting output of external device possible(ie;CD's)

"LOL" Thanks Moose & Vern,

Just as I suspected. I would have thought that being able to keep an
AUX IN source such as a CD from being sent out the DTXpress's main
L/R outputs would have been a given in the design of this unit.

I originally found this the hard way while trying to record into my
computer & the drum tracks contained the other instruments due to
how I had it all routed. (had headphones in DTX, the computer DAW's
monitors in AUX IN to the DTXpress)

I DO already have a small mixer that I use to work around that
problem if I want to monitor a source and not have it sent out the
L/R of the drum kit.

For ease while recording, mostly I monitor the DTXpress through the
monitor out of my DAW as a mix using the ASIO mixer in my sound
card's control panel to get the right volume blend during tracking.

I just wanted to check with you guy's to see if I was missing
something.

Thanks a bunch, Steve
