Adding cymbal(s)

Adding cymbal(s)

2003-07-07 by Darren Lo

So, I've decided to add a Visu-lite ride cymbal to my (stock) DTXPress.
As far as attaching it goes, I'm thinking of getting any old cymbal boom
arm and a Gibraltar multi-clamp, and maybe an extra angle brace or two to
help stabilize the rack (mine only has two of the braces right now, and
it's a bit wobbly). Is that really all there is to it, or are there
any hidden bugbears I should watch out for? It seems too simple :P

I'm curious how those of you with monster-size kits constructed your
rack systems. Did you start with a master plan in mind, or just add on
bits and pieces of hardware here and there?

I started with two dtxpressII kits. I completely disassembled the
racks and measured all the tubes. I then generated a 3D drawing of
the rack, pads, cymbals in Autocad, so I could visually see and
rotate the image 360 degrees to see how everything would fit together
and look. I then assembled and tweeked as required.

Now that's what I call commitment! :-)

Actually, if you're willing to share, it might be quite a neat feature to
have the 3d models of all the pieces in some format others might be able
to use. Did you use AUTOCAD? And you would you consider sharing the .dxf
or whatever was produced? :)

Great! I'll be happy to place it on the http://www.dtxpressions.com site.
I can send you the FTP info for you to send it up. Just let me know what
email address I need to send it to. :)

Vern,

I created the drawing in Autocad 2002. The drawing was of my phase II
set (two complete dtxpressII kits + (3) extra cymbals + (1) bell pad).
The Autocad 2002 drawing is 8.4 meg and a saved dxf format of it is
6.5 meg. I haven't had a chance to update it to my latest arrangement
yet. I don't mind passing it on. But because of it's size, we need to
find the right place for it.

Vern,

I did a quick save of a rendering of the file in the photos section.
Have I look at it to see if you still want it. The pads, cymbals are
blocks. The clamps are multiple components. The colors can be changed
to anything. I just pick them to give me better separation of the
components, while I was moving and shifting things.

I added a second rendering with more subdued coloring scheme.

Zipping the .dxf file should compress it significantly. The .dxf files
are just text, so I wouldn't be surprised if it zipped down as much as
80% or more.
