using a bass amp with dtxpress

2003-08-10 by k_johnson4

hi, my dtxpress is still being shipped to me, but i dont have a PA
system or anyhting to hear it off of, i know there is a headfone jack
but i weas wondering if i could plug it in to my crate bx-200
(200watt!) bass amp. I got 2 differnt speakers i could uyse with it.
an 18 inch cerwin vega speaker or a 14 inch crate speaker, i also got
a small rage 158 guitar amp. (i htink thzat one is 15 watts) i was
wondering if it would ruin either one of them, or which one may be
the best setup. has any1 ever used a guitar or bass amp b4? any help
would eb appreciated (u can email me at CQRNELIUS@... or post
a message but id rather be emailed to)

thank you,
Joseph Cornelius

-I am also goin to sell the rack that is coming with my dtxpress,im
getting a new one that is the rs65 but the one i am selling is the
rs60 rack. if any1 interested they can email me to.

hello Joseph,
I use a mcgregor 300watt bass amp and a cab with two 15inch
speakers. And I find it meets my needs quite easily. Having said
that, I do seem to be in a minority, with most other people in the
group opting for a keyboard amp. There is a pic of the setup in the
photos section, under bass amp.
But like most things musical, it will be a case of try it and see
what you
think.

Re: [DTXpress] Re: using a bass amp with dtxpress

2003-08-11 by Vernon Graner

I think the reason so many have chosen the "keyboard" style amp rather
than a Bass amp is the keyboard amps usually have more ability to
reproduce upper and mid range sounds like Cymbals. I know that some bass
amps have mids/tweeters in them but not many. Most I have used have a
single large cone woofer (15" or 18") that usually cuts off at about 8khz
or so. Though this is usually plenty high enough to detail fingering on a
Bass, it will make cymbals sound pretty crummy.

Though keyboard amps don't usually have quite the same gut-rumbling power
that a bass amp does (unless they are bi-amped), they usually do have the
ability to produce mid and high range which is needed for a full-range
kit sound.

If it were me, I might try to find a small keyboard amp that had a
variable sub-woofer output (crossover freq and gain) and then send the
sub signal to the big killer bass amp. That would be fun... oh, and of
course I'd place that big bruiser bass bin *right* behind my throne! :D

Actually I *have* considered getting one of these!

In case that wraps, try http://www.musiciansfriend.com/ and then type
"buttkicker" into the search field. Pretty neat! :)

Re: [DTXpress] using a bass amp with dtxpress

I use a TubeWorks 300watt Bass Head with a TubeWorks 4x10 speaker cabinet,
and a Roland KC-500 Keyboard Amp. I have used the Roland by itself, the
Tubeworks by itself, and both together. The TubeWorks 4x10 and Bass Head by itself
sound better than the Roland by itself. I have used a Guitar Amp before and they
sound really crappy because they cannot handle the bottom end.

Well, maybe its because I am English. But the idea of having an
attachment on my throne to send bass signal up my arse sounds
slightly dodgy.
And I thought we were getting rid of porn. :-)

Darren,

Drum-related porn is ok.

Ed

PS I probably shouldn't have said that.

It's funny as heck, actually, now that I think about it... Just imagine the
headlines in the papers -

"Mysterious low sound found in south neighborhood"

. . . is said to last for 8 hours at a time. . .
. . . engineers said sound hovers around 12-18 Hz, or cycles per second. . .
. . . said to be annoying to neighbors and passerbys in the area. . .

Vern:
I've considered it too. They're pretty expensive. There was another
similar model reviewed in MD a few months back. There were different
wattage models available with the cheapest being about $175.

I'll look it up and get the info to you.
