Nearly new user of DTXpress

Hi all,

I'm really excited that I've decided to make the change from the old
Pearl to a Yamaha DTXpress.

I'm new to the electronic kit side of drumming, but have been playing
an acoustic kit for some 15 years. I've read a lot about the
DTXpress, but have a couple of questions for any of you…

. I've had a couple of quotes, but what price should I be paying in
the UK now?
. What are they like for gigging?
. I'll need to MIDI up a click from my keyboardists equipment, can
this be done?
. Does anyone know where the best place in the North West of the UK
to go for one?

I'll be checking in to this site regularly, as its EXCELLENT, so any
info would be much appreciated.

Cheers
Simon

Simon,

Hi, I got a DTXpress from DrumWorld in Wales 2 months back for £699 inc. VAT.
I've subsequently noticed they're changing hands in Rhythm Readers Ads for
more than that 2nd-hand!
If you want to ring them, it's 01267-233533.
I've only rehearsed with the kit once, through a vocal PA, so it would be
unfair to judge it's sound quality thus. However, setup is a piece of piss. I
think the DTXpress is probably best when 'beefing up' you acoustic kit
though. Just my opinion.

Enjoy it,

James.

Hi Simon,

Try Electromusic in Doncaster - well worth the trip anyway cos its a great music shop (er shop is a poor description!!!)

The DTXpress is great at home and works well for live work. I sound crew for Parallel or 90 Degrees and one live gig at a small pub venue went amazingly well - certainly a very full range sound, lots of bottom end - just through a couple of Peavey 500MXT monitors driven with a Yamaha P4500 amp (via a desk).

At home you will need a hi-fi amp or similar and phones to get a decent sound level because Yamaha keep the DTX phones output level quite low. It also work OK with Cubase VST for recording etc...

With Mirror Image I use the DTXpress recorded or live through a largish PA - sounds great!

Unfortunately, I think any midi click generated from the DTX via another midi device will be heard via the PA.

It's all been said, but just for clarity,

Cheapest price in the UK is Drum World in wales \ufffd699 includes delivery!
Don't expect great customer service though and don't let them talk you into
buying anything except what you intended to before you rang.

Live the DTXpress is very good, the voice quality is excellent, but I would
recommend you buy your own PA and go through that, micing up tot he desk if
necessary. Reason is you get a much more predictable sound that way, if you
go straight from the DTXpress to the desk you will get a different sound gig
to gig because of the different audio systems used in each venue.

As for the click track, I'm afraid the DTXpress only has one sound bus, so
whatever comes out the headphones also goes to the front of house. If you
want to work to a click, then you will have to splice it into the line
between your headphones and the DTXpress, not hard to do with suitable leads
and jack adapters. If you want a headphone output live I would recommend
you take one from your own backline (PA). The DTXpress headphone output is
adequate in a live gig, but you hear as much coming back from front of house
as you do through the headset (remember volume output is volume output, for
headphones as well as front of house!)
