GM sound settings

2003-09-23 by Khew's Magix

Hi,
Just got a DTXpress II and am trying out the "non-drum" part of it.
Managed to get it out of Channel 10 (:-P) to the other MIDI channels in order to access the GM sounds.
Only thing is WHERE am I able to SEE the GM list of sounds on the module?
Basically, I am trying to set up a timpani kit but I can't seem to see the GM list in order for me to scroll to the timpani patch. I've gone thru the 2 manuals several times and all it says is that you CAN do this but doesn't go around showing you HOW to do it! :-P
Also, after this is done, I assume I can save this as a "Timpani Kit" in the user program and call it up?
Please help! :-o
Thank you!
Khew

Hi Khew,

Fairly new to the DTX2 myself and had the same question.
Unfortunately neither the archives nor private emails had all the
proper steps to do this…so I contacted Martin at Yamaha and he
walked me through the process…and now I have a really cool steel
drum user set-up. I'm assuming you know how to select a pad, page
up/down,etc and you have your owners manual at the ready……Here we
go…

1. Select a drum kit and enter the Drum Kit Voice Edit Mode

2. Page down to Channel, Gate Time (1-7 page 18 in manual). On
second line of display change the "Ch=" to any number 1-16
except 10 (lets say Ch= 11). That's all you change here.

3. Now page down to Program Change, Bank Select (4-1 page 22 in
manual). On the top line you will see Kit PC Ch "x"=on.
Change the Ch to the same number you selected in 2 above and select =
on. In our example this would now read Ch 11=on. On the same page now
cursor over to the second line to PC= "x" Here's where you
select the GM keyboard voice 1-128 listed on page 42 of the manual.
For example, PC=48 would have the timpani sound you want, PC=105
would be a sitar and so on. You don't need to change any other
parameters on this page.

4. At this point striking the edited pad should sound the GM
voice that you want…but the note assigned to it may be too high
or low to give an adequate rendition of what the voice should sound
like…so

5. Page up to Note Number (1-6 page 18 in manual) and on the
second line that says Note#= "x" select a midi note # 0-127
(C-2 to G8) that makes the selected instrument voice sound
"realistic".

6. Repeat all of this for each pad you want to program. Goes
much faster if you're in the Learn mode…and then save your
kit if you so desire. You should then have a set of timps tailor made
to your desires.

That should do it…..if it doesn't email me privately and
we'll try to work it out…

Regards,

Rich

Dear Khew and Rich,

Thanks for the procedure to access the GM sounds. I didn't think it
was possible without a midi/computer setup.

I had limited success programing the drums though. Everything seemed
to work fine until I saved the setup. I was programing the sounds onto the
snare and three toms. Toms 2 and 3 reverted to another sound after saving the
1st time. I tried again and the same thing happened. The third time it worked,
but only for one strike, on toms 3&4 after saving. Any ideas on what may be
happening?

Perry,

I had exactly the same problem this week with saving a GM drum kit.
Must be something in the ether. Everything was perfect during set-up
but wouldn't save. When I went in to look at each parameter in the
newly "saved" kit for "correctness" I noticed that all was cool
except for the midi note number. What seems to have happened was that
the actual note voice (ie, A, G, E etc) I had programmed in was OK
but the note number was wrong by octaves. In other words, although I
originally set-up an A4, G4, etc. it got saved as A0, G0 etc. By
going in and editing only the note # again (don't re-input the midi
channel, PC etc.) and then saving I was able to save the kit

..bagpipes this time. Be interesting to know if you have the similar
readings, ie, wrong octaves but "right" note voice. (I have no idea
why after striking a pad you reverted back)

I don't know what the heck was the problem as I had NO trouble before
setting up and saving a steel-drum kit using the same procedure from
Martin at Yamaha that I posted.

Anyone else have a similar problem. Is there something here we're
missing?

Rich
