home studio/dumsticks

Howdy,

One of my short term personal projects is to have my
little home studio, just a basic drums/bass/guitar/mic
setup, I've thought about buying a mixer but I don't
really need professional quality recording I'd be
recording with my PC, and mostly doing all the playing
myself, :'( I have no friends to play with.

Whenever I record a song I'll be happy to share it
with the group.

My first option is the Kustom PA found at
http://www.kustom.com/products/pa/kpa100.asp

It has a stereo output for recording, 4 mono inputs
this at first seemed like something bad since I need
one stereo input for the drums, but it has a CD input
in the rear, and there I found the solution, I would
even be able to connect a second mic, or a keyboard or
whatever I can fit inside my little playroom.

What do you think of this PA?, does anyone have a
similar setup to the one I plan?, does anyone have
experience with this PA?

and one more thing, I'm just learning to play drums
and playing about an hour a day I get some sort of
fatigue caused by the vibration of my drumsticks, is
it just a matter of time and practice?

I have promark wood tip drumsticks.

Wich drumsticks do you prefer?

Wich drumsticks will do the least harm to my pads?, I
really want them to last a long time.

Pedro.

Ah, the Quest for the Perfect Drumstick. Like the Quest for the
Perfect Wallet (pocketbook), one that lasts a lifetime.

At the moment, I am pretty hooked on Vater 7A Manhattan. The Vater 7A
is the same diameter as everyone else's (.540") but is a full 16"
long instead of the more usual 15.5". It has a round tip and a lovely
feel, very light, responsive and with a great rebound, but plenty
heavy enough for e-drum work. The downside is it's highly polished
and, in my case with very dry hands, does spend some poportion of the
time flying around the music room under its own steam. I also have
some Vic Firth 8Ds which are (theoretically) the same dimensions but
which have a very broad shoulder and not as much taper as the Vater,
and feel a lot heavier. I use these when I want a bit of a thrash.

I have some Zildjian dip 6A, which are good for grip, with the same
dimensions as the Vater, but they are *incredibly* light - in theory
they're hickory, but they feel like balsa! They're actually too
light. I just use them when I'm having a Bad Flying Stick day.

I also have some Zildjian "anti-vibe" 5As - regular 5A with an anti-
vibration core in the butt of the stick. While they definitely do
what they advertise - reduce impact vibration - I have gone off them
in a big way. First, they're too big. But worse, the downside of
killing vibrations is it also badly affects rebound. Playing
rudiments with them on is really difficult. I now only use them if I
have sore hands for some reason.

I have some Promark 5A and hate them (incredibly crude finish), and
an unknown brand of stick which just bear the word "Jazz" and seem to
be 16" x .500" (yes, half an inch). These are a bit too flighty too.

So - right now my recommendation for e-drumming is Vater 7A Manhattan.

  I have (in order of thickness) 2B, 5A and 7A Zildjian Anti-Vibe
sticks. I don't like the acorn tips of the 2B and 5A, and agree with
Stewart that they make playing hard work. However, I really like the
ball tipped 7As even though they are a much smaller diameter than I'd
usually play with. I would certainly check them out as they've reduced
the wear and tear on my hands considerably. In Vater I like the Fusion.
But really, there are so many good sticks out there, I would go down to
your local drum store and try a few out.

Pedro:
I used to use this Kustom PA. I found it fine for home use. However,
with 10" speakers and 80 watts, it wasn't adequate for live gigs (not
even as a monitor because the bass starts to 'bark' if the volume
gets turned up past 4 or 5).

For home use it should do just fine, and the price is right.
