Yamaha DTXpress/DTXplorer/DTXtreme

Has anyone modified their cymbal mounts to be inside the upright 
posts of the rack?   The reason I want to do this is the cymbals seem 
too close together and I'm planning to add a new Pintech cymbal and 
want to reuse the rack clamp so I can mount the cymbal on the Floor 
Tom bar.

I have seen this on Gilbralter Racks before, but I just wonder if 
someone has already done the engineering.

If I get the gist of what you're talking about, I've done just that. 
Gibraltar makes a device that sits atop the vertical legs of the rack 
that accepts a standard cymbal tube. When breaking down, the cymbal 
stand disappears into the tube (very handy). I think I paid somewhere 
around $18 each for these. 
That's the store-bought solution.
