RDT and Creighton,
I sugggest that both of you go the following addresss and sign up:
http://www.electronicdrums.com/
If you join (and pay the nominal fee), you will find an extensive
description of how to convert acoustic drums to electronic. I am a
member. This site has the clearest, most helpful instructions in one
place that you are likely to find. As Creighton said, many people at
vdrums.com and edrumming.com have discussed such projects on the
boards--most notably Chris Jude, who just completed an elaborate
conversion of his own. BUt for straightforward illustration and
explanation, the electronicdrums site can't be beat. RDT, you might
also read the "Short Course" on triggers that I uploaded to the files
section last weekend. Bob Giles' primer might just inspire you, as it
did Creighton.
