I've Got Blisters on My Fingers!!!!

I've Got Blisters on My Fingers!!!!

have any of you noticed that when you switched to e-drums you
developed blisters in new and unusual places on your hands? what's the
deal with this? the middle finger on my left hand has a big nasty
blister from hitting the snare pad that i did not have when playing
acoustic drums. my theory is that a mesh head trigger would cause much
less blistering because of the natural 'bounce' of it. hitting that 8"
rubber pad must be doing this.

Jay,

When I started playing the rubber pads, my fingers blistered a lot.
But since I primarily use match grip, my middle finger wasn't
affected much. It would stand to reason that the middle finger on the
left hand would suffer on rubber with a traditional grip. One benefit
of playing meshes, besides the relative lack of noise, is that it's
easier on your joints and skin. But you'll still need to change those
blister points into callouses and play regularly to keep them that
way.

Jay,

Let me add that playing with a lighter touch may help. I also used
gloves every now and then. Sometimes I could deal with the loss of
feel, and sometimes I couldn't.

weird. i also use match grip. i think it's just sloppy playing. as a
guitarist and sax player, i was never taught how to hold the sticks,
or even how to play drums. i just essentially taught myself from
listening to great drummers for so many years.

this brings up a good point. i would like to take lessons. does anyone
out there teach, or know of a good place to look for an experienced
instructor? i am in the dallas, tx area.

Jay:
I experienced the same problem with the blisters. I switched to
matched grip to overcome the problem. I then 'went mesh' and back to
traditional grip without any problem.
