Yamaha DTXpress/DTXplorer/DTXtreme

I have a DW pedal that has two sides, the felt and the hard plastic 
side. I heard somewhere that the felt side is not to be used on mesh 
kick drums. Is that right? What should I use?

Apparently, the felt fibers imperceptively eat through the meshes; 
wood or plastic is better.
