What is a decent amp

What is a decent amp

2004-02-05 by boomer535

I'm in the market for an amp to play the DTxpress through. Is there
anything out there that will do the job for less than $100? A dealer
wants to sell me a small Peavey bass amp for About $90. I think he
said it was 15 watts. Will I get distortion at a moderate volume?

Ken,

Tempting as it may be to have an amp, don't get the 15 watt Peavey
for $90. Nothing that I can imagine for $100 is going to do anything
remotely like justice to how an e-drum kit can sound when properly
amplified. If you're going to get an amp at all in the days ahead,
make it a keyboard amp, not a bass or guitar amp, which will not be
able to handle the output of an e-kit. For now, get yourself a good
pair of studio headphones (high sensitivity, low impedance--generally
about $80 street) and enjoy the ride, because it won't get any better
than that with an amp unless you spend hundreds more (for at least
150 watts but preferably more, a 12 to 15" woofer [or powered sub], a
competent tweeter, and wide dynamic range). Someone with an ultra
high-end home stereo capable of taking serious punishment can get
away with connecting an e-kit to it on a lark, but ordinary home
audio need not apply.

Save up your money and get a decent amp. Like Liberatus pointed out, the way
to go is a keyboard amp. What happens when you play a drumset through an amp
is each sound is peaked (short duration) which needs a lot of power. This is
very hard on an amp. You need to have lot of power or it can sound like you have
a blown speaker. Especially with the kick drum sound. I have a Roland
KC-500. It is 150 watts with a 15" speaker and horn. I consider that a minimum. I
had a 100 watt Acoustic Guitar Amp with a 12" speaker and that was terrible. It
sound OK except when you heard the Kick Drum. I also used for a while a 4X10
cabinet with a 300 watt Bass Amplifier. That rocked! But I sold it cause I
needed the cash. But don't skimp. You will regret it.
