Amp recomendations

Amp recomendations

2004-02-07 by boomer535

Thanks to all that responded and gave advice. Much appreciated.
Yesterday, I came home with a Behringer BX600 60watt bass amp. The
fellow in the music store assured me that I would be happy with it or
I could return it, and so far I am. Plenty of volume for my use and
produces high end and bass equally as well without distortion.

Anyone else have an opinion on this amp?

My question is, how can it produce any upper mids or even highs? What it can
produce is usually depends on the size of the speaker (diameter), how much
power, how well-controlled that power is, etc.

I have a Beringer KX-1200 keyboard amp that I bought for about $260, and I
really like it! It's one of the few 3-way amps out there.

According to the specs it has :
a 12" speaker
extremely efficient shape filter for total sound manipulation
ultimate punch through innovative dynamizer technology
ultra-musical active 4-band equalizer
etc.
does the job quite well.

As a bass amp, does it actually have enough high frequency response to
make realistic cymbal sounds? I haven't heard it but I would imagine a
Bass amp would top out at about 6khz to 8 khz... To get close to
reasonable cymbal sounds, I would guess you'd need at least
10khz-15khz... Do you know what the frequency response the amp you got
has?

Ken,

I'm going to second Vern and Steph. Forgetting power, headroom,
design, and other considerations for the moment. Bass amps produce
only a fraction of the frequencies that an e-drum is capable reaching
because bass guitars don't need them. Forgive me if I sound pedantic,
but you may think that the amp is doing an adequate job only because
you have no basis for comparison. I don't know how many times I
reached a certain fairly lofty plateau in audio, thinking that the
sound couldn't possibly get any better only to find out that I was
wrong; you have barely scratched the surface with a 60 watt bass amp
connected to an electronic drumkit. If the store where you bought the
amp is so accommodating, ask if they'll let you take home a modestly
powered keyboard amp, like the Roland KC550 or its equivalent, to
hear what you might be missing. If your ears don't register a
difference, or enough of a difference, to justify all the crowing
that we've done, more power to you.

Thanks, I value your opinion and I may just do that. I do have that option for 30 days.

There is none listed in the "specs" but I suppose I could ask on their web site. Prolly should do that eh?

I'll third it. You really need a good keyboard amp at the least to do
the DTXpress justice. The Behringer KX1200 is a fantastic amp to start
with, plenty of power, and great frequency response, at a fraction of
the Roland cost.

So loud I can't crank it all the way, otherwise it causes the drum set to
double trigger or mistrigger because of the vibrations! The power supply on
this amp seems to have a very high damping factor (ability to accurately
control the specific movements of the speaker cone - if the sound needs to
stop, it needs to stop NOW, not a few microseconds later). You have to push
the amp really good to get the 15" subwoofer's voice coil clanging against
the back of the magnet, which you get with very low frequencies if the amp
isn't strong enough or tight enough.
