2004-03-31 by bizarrius69

im wating for my dtxpress set to arrive at the moment, stupid cyprus
i have to order it from US, anyway do you know if i can use it live?
i have a heavy metal rock band and i think plugging my set live will
be much easier to set up a wicked sound. but i dont know if it would
be something it would get me through the night... anyone tryed the
kits live with a heavy metal rock band ever? can you tell me wat goes
on about the FEEL? cause the feel is everything i believe in music!

thx

Hi Demetris,

I think it depends on the size of places you play to some extent.

The bands I play /have played in over the past 4 years with the
Dtxpress only play small-ish places but all get pretty loud by the
end of the night - one of the reasons I switched from acoustic drums
(no matter how loud the rest of the band get I can still be
louder! :-)

However it took me a long time to find a sound system to both
recreate the feel of the sound of an acoustic kit around you at low
volume levels and control the output of the Dtxpress through the
main band PA at high volume levels (we do our own PA - no sound man).

My personal solution is a small PA system just for the drums with
the speakers beside and slightly behind the kit.
It was fairly expensive with a 1.5KW amp, a signal processor and big
speakers.
In extensive testing we found that the output from the Dtxpress at
high volumes can trash speaker cones if the amp is not big enough -
some of the sounds seem to have a huge ultra-low component or
something.
So we put the output from the Dtxpress into the signal processor to
limit the ultra-low sounds, add a bit of compression and allow some
EQ before the sound is output to my speakers and also goes to the
main PA of the band.

In larger venues you would probably have proper monitors and the
whole thing would go through the main PA system, but for me this
setup works OK.

Feel-wise I need that up-close surround sound that you naturally get
with a real kit - without proper monitoring of some sort if the
sound is only going out of the main PA of the band then there is
often a muddied or delayed sound coming to you back of the walls.
Headphones might be an answer for the drummer, but the rest of the
band like to hear the drums beside them also.

(You might also find that the rest of the band don't like edrums coz
they ain't shiny ! :-)

I hope that's of some help.

regards,
Will
