The Kid Is Happy

The Kid Is Happy

2004-05-09 by Frank & Susan Malinowski

My son will be 15 soon. He has been taking drum lessons for 3 years now and
we picked up a DTXpress I last summer. It has been great listening to the
clicking from his room as he plays with headphones. Well we made a serious
shift today and picked up a used Peavy KB/A 100 amplifier. This group
helped in the selection process as I know almost nothing about music or
druming although I know a bit about electronics. I want to thank the group
for being willing to respond to my dumb questions. The fellow we bought it
from had quite an electronic setup with a DTXpress to test the amp with
(and a Roland keyboard and lots of other electronic mixers and other gear).
My kid is grinning like a 5 year old riding on a fire truck. This amp
sounds really good with the drums. I told him to keep the volume to level 2
and I am sure he will do that when anyone is home. Now he can start playing
with friends. He is making a lot of adjustments as the speaker sound is
different from the headphone sound. Just generally a good day here I
thought I would share with you drum folks.

Frank,

That's a terrific story. On behalf of the group, a sincere "you're
welcome." It's always gratifying to find that we helped in some
small way. If you don't mind my saying so, your son also seems to
have won the parents lottery. Please feel free to tell us about your
continuing adventures and encourage your son to contact us in the
first person whenever he has something to share.

Ahh, memories... I remember when I was 12, having been in the school band for
over a year and a half. It was early morning on the weekend in April ('cause
it was a little cool in the mornings, still), and the sun was out. I was up
early because I was waiting for my first drum set, a Ludwig set with the
Ringo black oyster shell wrap finish and beatup, cracked cymbals. My Dad's
accountant was bringing them to me from Hank Joseph's pawn shop on Leopard
Street in Corpus Christi (we were living elsewhere at the time). I never
forgot that day!

Thanks,
Stephanie

Frank, There are no "dumb questions" when it comes to fulfilling
your son's dreams and ambitions. I cheated when I was his age: I
beat holes in my Dad's bar stools with screw drivers listening to
the Beatles...He bought me a set of drums. From that moment on, as I
progressed and joined a band, he ALWAYS supported me- even let us
practice in his basement, drove us to gigs, waited and waited for us
to finish and pack up. I know he didn't like the "noise", I know he
feared the drugs and alcohol..He probably didn't even like the
music..BUT he was always there in support of a little drummer with
big eyes and high hopes but very little experience or common sense.
I just lost that tower of encouragement, and as I think of him, I
remember his undaunting support that probably started with a
few "dumb questions". Keep them coming,Frank, you are already his
hero!

I know the feeling:

 :)

PS: Notice the little yellow chair behind the throne, she pushes that
chair over to the kit and then climbs up onto the throne, pulls the
sticks from the holder, presses the power button and then jams... and
she's not even 2 yet! :D
