Yamaha DTXpress/DTXplorer/DTXtreme

I just got back from jamming with a 3 piece, blues stuff. They had a 
Roland v set with mesh heads and told me to leave my set at home. I 
could not feel what I was doing, it was like I was hitting air. They 
sounded good and all, but next time I'm toting my set over there, 
man... after playing something else, it makes me appreciate my 
DTXpress that much more, guess the rubber pads have me spoiled with 
the feel, and it seems that an accoustic set is between mesh and 
rubber, is that accurate? And to think, I was looking at getting a 
large mesh type snare (reason unknown) maybe they look cool, but I'm 
glad I sat down on that kit. I love my yamaha twice as much now.

oh yeah, he did have a cool amp, that beast of a roland drum amp, 300 
watts or something.

Hi Rob,

I suspect that you could eventually get used to a mesh kit, but your 
muscle memory right now is all for rubber. The mesh heads that 
shipped with the Roland V's are among the bounciest ones in 
captivity, probably contributing to the impression that you were 
hitting air. I've played on mesh pads for a long time. I recently put 
in some time with a rubber pad, and I felt like I was playing 
flypaper on a cement block; it's partly a matter of habit. Mesh heads 
that don't rebound as much as the stock Rolands simulate acoustics 
better than the traditional gum rubber pads. But I have yet to try 
the new rubber pads on the DTXT2S, which are supposed to be an 
altogether different experience (see Zorro's recent comments on them 
that I posted here a few days ago).

Roland with 300-watts...thats a good $1000 I'd say at the least, 
probably more.
