Dw8000 did have a battery that looked like a D cell
that was soldered in. Sounds like he has it back but doesn't have the sounds in
right

It would seem that you still haven't used a DW8000, as the DW8000 does not
run off C or D battery power. You probably have a Poly800.
Maybe take a look at the top, see what it really is and write back?
