You can also output NEF files from your Nikon scanning software. When used with Capture NX2, it will show you all the Nikon scanner settings which can be very useful as part of the evaluation and applied learning of scanning. See the setting, see the result, know what does what by visual inspection. So if you like to have as much information as possible in your scan and never redo the scan then use the 4000 SPI setting and use the 16 bit output. For archiving a normal Tiff file at 16 bit can be smaller than a compressed 16 bit Tiff file. Compressed PNG will deliver a smaller file but that format is less supported.
