Scan resolution 4000 dpi?

Scan resolution 4000 dpi?

2010-08-01 by Lew Schwartz

I recently completed a short class in B&W digital printing. The instructor
recommended always scanning 35mm negs at 4000 dpi. 4000 is, in fact, the max
listed in VueScan software for my Nikon LS-5000, but other settings are
allowed. I'd like each scan to be the last I'll ever have to do for a given
neg, so what are the ins & outs of this choice?

image, if needed. If you scan at a lower res, you could possible need a
higher res scan. In that case, you'd have to rescan. Another advantage is
that scanning at the max optical resolution will give you the most detail
and cleanest files that you can get from that negative/scanner combination.

The Nikons have a reputation that the true optical resolution is close
to the manufacturer's specs on sampling, a Nikon 8000 sampling at 4000
SPI will deliver around 3700 PPI optical resolution . So if you like to
have as much information as possible in your scan and never redo the
scan then use the 4000 SPI setting and use the 16 bit output. For
archiving a normal Tiff file at 16 bit can be smaller than a compressed
16 bit Tiff file. Compressed PNG will deliver a smaller file but that
format is less supported. Then there is the "RAW" output of Vuescan or
the DNG format.

You can also output NEF files from your Nikon scanning software. When used
with Capture NX2, it will show you all the Nikon scanner settings which can
be very useful as part of the evaluation and applied learning of scanning.
See the setting, see the result, know what does what by visual inspection.
