New York City B&W

I'll be in NYC next week and wanted to be sure I didn't miss any special B&W exhibits. Please let me know of any that are "must see" events.

Thanks,

Paul

Hi Paul:

If you like NYC street photography in B&W, and if you were thinking of going to the Met to see anything else, this looks like a good show:

Paul -
A woman photography show is going on at MoMA (I need to get to that myself), and the Metropolitan has a wonderful permanent collection too :)

Paul, I was just there and recommend these:

ICP has a great show up with many stunning B&W images:

"For All the World to See: Visual Culture and the Struggle for Civil Rights explores the historic role of visual culture in shaping, influencing, and transforming the fight for racial equality and justice in the United States from the late 1940s to the mid 1970s."

http://www.icp.org/site/c.dnJGKJNsFqG/b.5937031/k.6A19/For_All_the_World_to_See.htm

Also, Howard Greenberg Gallery is usually a great bet and the Miroslav Tichy and Josef Sudek show is no exception:

Have a great time...I love NYC and travel there as frequently as I can!

Hi Paul -
It's Friday the 23rd, and if you're still in NYC here's another
excellent show - opened a few days ago -
Elliot Erwitt has a great show at the Chelsea Market -- Ninth Avenue
between 15th and 16th Streets.
The market had been the Sunshine Biscuit factory many years ago, and
is now a fantastic collection
of food venues, a few bakeries, the best Italian food market I've
found, and lot of other things - mostly high end -- no McDonalds here.
The market runs all the way to 10th Avenue and much of it's length
has Erwitt's prints on the walls.
No crowds like the museums have, and beautifully printed B&Ws, all
shot in Italy as far back as (I think) the 50's, all the way up to 2009.
I think you'll enjoy it!

Re: New York City B&W

I've seen shows there up for a month at times, but I think recently
they've not lasted that long.
I'm sure you can count on at least two or three weeks. To find out
exact info, I found this
email address:
Contact music@...
Couldn't find a phone number for you though.

While I wouldn't pretend to compete with Paul, I also went to NYC in June to shoot some scenes around town. My (very different kind of) images can be found at my pbase site: pbase.com/hlockwood in the "NYC June 2010" gallery. These are the first scans; more to follow. Taken with M7 and XP2, all in Manhattan.

Very nice, and much more typical of NY style street shooting. I'm obviously not a street shooter, but rather a typical "western landscape" type of guy. I do appreciate the forms of the urban environment, however.

> Taken with M7 and XP2 ...

Until the full frame digital cameras came out, I would take these types of shots with my Bronica RF 645 or Fuji Zi 645 and Kodak's version of XP2 -- T400CN. The "645" really does better with Tech Pan, however. The Fuji Zi took a number of my best selling photos, but it was also the first to be sold when the FF digitals arrived.

The digital camera's high speed options obviously allowed things like the subway shot that would be rather hard to do with a 400 ISO film. The Leica M9, however, using a Kodak CCD sensor is not up to the modern Canon & Nikon CMOS high speed standards. (It's smoother than the Canon 5D2 at low speeds.) The 2500 ISO subway shot is "grainy" at higher magnifications. Lightroom 3's new algorithms do a very good job with color noise, but they have no magic for the luminance noise. Given the subway subject matter, however, it's not inappropriate.

I might add that the M9 is about relatively small size (for a full frame digital -- I use an old, modified Pentax Spotmatic ever-ready case), more traditional manual controls, and excellent symmetrical wide angle lenses. The M9 with the Zeiss 35mm 2.8 lens, in the old Pentax case, was a very enjoyable and practical (including well protected) combination to carry around while being a typical tourist. And it (like the other FF digitals) is capable of making files that hold up well with the largest sizes I print on my Epson 7800.

Paul,

Nice photos! I went to NYC two years ago and visited all of the museums and
saw all of the usual tourist attractions. We had a great time and are
anxious to go back. Seems like there are so many places I want to go to and
just not enough time or money.

Thanks,

Paul, how big a print would you think of making from one of your M9 profiles?

Most will scale to 22 x 28 inches. The subway shot (wide open at 2500 ISO) will be a little soft and rough at that size.

Your images were not of NYC.... they were of yourself in various locations. You could have easily started a new thread that would have kept the subject on photos of sites in NYC.
