The best scanning service is one that understands your needs. When people ask for scanning, they need to be specific about the requirements. Real fluid mounted drum scans remain the gold standard for top quality (sorry Flex owners) but maybe the need is for a reasonable cost on a quantity of scans suitable for web use or small prints which is at the opposite end of the spectrum. How good a scan you can get for a price at either extreme is the question. There are places that will scan slides for less than 50 cents each and places that will scan them for hundreds of dollars each and there is everything in between. Either could be a bargain or a waste of money depending what you actually need and ultimately get. When people come to my shop, we usually have to play 20 questions before we can offer the best price and matching service and sometimes we even pass on the job.
