RE: [Digital BW] Brown Tone Ink Set Needed

2011-06-28 by E.Neilsen

How do you relate brown to the Sepia set of Cones Piezotones - Sepia. I call
that a brown. Sepia is just as hard to call as a "platinum" since MOST
platinum prints these days are REALLY only palladium prints. Perhaps get
three channels using the dark tone and back one of the three off to 50%. Or
just over print a brown color.

Subject: [Digital BW] Brown Tone Ink Set Needed

I am hoping someone can suggest a starting point as I am back to square one
(almost) after a year and a half.

I need quadtone inks (6 or 7 dilutions probably) that will be used in an
Epson SP 3800 w/QTR. I need to produce full brown tones, not subtle like
sepia but frank unmistakable browns. I know this presents archival problems.
They have to be secondary to image color. On the other hand I would prefer
the least problematic inks possible under the circumstances.

I am aware there is nothing like this at the moment but need a starting
point with currently available inks. I print only on matte rag papers.

I presume a good starting point would be MIS MK for the black and gray
dilutions but have no idea what colored pigments to use or how to approach
their use; whether to mix the color pigments with the black or put them in
separate cartridges for more control. The latter would seem more logical as
it would allow me to create different profiles for different papers.

I see there are ink sets that have color pigments for cooling naturally warm
black inks to a neutral tone so am wondering if simply using the same kind
of set up with opposite colors might be the place to start.

All ideas/suggestions are welcome. And yes, I know about ABW. That is not
what I am after.
