From your description I would guess that the inkjet coating (remember, it is different material from the paper underneath; so different reactions to stresses, humidity, etc.) is cracking as it is stretched under the weight of the large piece of paper. See if the cracks are not along the same lines as the greatest pull on the paper from its own weight.
