If memory serves me correctly, probably around 1930, traditional photography as we know it today was not accepted by the art market, in sales terms, because having a "negative" meant one could make multiple prints rendering them not valuable as a collectable. My guess is Ansel Adams proved this theory wrong when he started selling portfolios and multiple prints. Moonrise, that was never limited in any way, was the highest priced photo ever sold, around 25 years ago. I think this whole situation just needs a bit of time to lapse for proper perspective.
