An analogy I've heard is that pigments through an inkjet nozzle are like bee-bees through a basketball hoop.

There did appear to be a higher incidence of problems with pigments in the old 1280, but all of the newer ones have been fine, with the 1400 being the most reliable printer I've used with pigments.
