If it is a new unit I'd make a warranty claim -- send it back for a new one.  In the US Epson is very good about that.  (Then they resell them on the "refurb" market.)

If you use QTR it's easy to use just 5 inks, and Eboni-5 works fine.  I have a fair number of Eboni-4 (Y [2%}, LM [6%], M [18%] and K) QTR profiles in the Zip file.

Not really.  I often used the LC-C spots for cool glossy inks.  In fact, you could just put some generic base in the LC spot and ignore it.  Then use the C spot for a cool toner if you wanted that option.
