The subscription model is also a refuge for a company running out of ideas...plumping for annuity income (smaller, steady state cash flow) rather than transactional income (potentially larger, riskier cash flow) is a sure sign of weariness in innovation within a company.

One advantage of the subscription model that I have not seen mentioned is
one put forward by Thomas Knoll in an interview with Michael Reichman,
namely that the engineers will not have to spend so much time producing
headline-grabbing new features for conventional upgrades, but will be able
to devote more time to improving performance, getting rid of bugs, and doing
things that make the programs easier to use, thus making their subscribers
happier while using the programs. An important point that I welcome.
