Problem is, sending a check still doesn't protect you. Ignoring for the moment the risk of the check being lost in the mail, unless you're paying an individual or a very small business, nearly 100% of payees will submit the check electronically (just as though you had allowed them to direct debit your account) and then "destroy" the check. Basically it has cost you the price of a stamp and a check and left you more vulnerable than had you done direct debit since there is precious little guarantee that the minimum-wage grunts they hire to destroy the checks will actually do so. If you want to avoid the risk you'll need to haul cash to the nearest post office (or CVS, etc.) and buy money orders. Or I suppose you could try paying in Bitcoins . Most wire service agreements require one to accept the institutions policy for doing business. I have yet to read a policy that doesn't say you can not hold them responsible for errors in your account and take them to court. They all have stated in their users agreements that all disputes will be handled by THEIR arbitration board, and that finding is final. Have fun with that if you ID is stollen. With the government digging through Internet transactions, and sharing that info with other agencies, as well as other countries, I would rather not have anything traceable by wire. Anything you put on the Internet, or on the wire can be received by someone else. They can use whatever they find the way they want. If that is OK by you, have fun. It is not fine by me.
