I recommend he obtain the book: The Complete Guide to Black & White Digital Photography, by Michael Freeman, Lark Books, New York/London. It is well written, easy to follow, coves all the B&W workflow aspects - from shooting to PS manipulation through to printing, including various PS approaches to B&W conversion [surprised the school focus on desaturation - “desaturate’ is a very, very, very basic technique and not a very good one], including the pros and cons of using Nik Silver Efex Pro, and PS black & white adjustment layers, etc.
