The hextone printers may have a small advantage is smoothness, but the more
I deal with them the less I like them. I like the quads in part because
they are easier for me to mix and load inks into. However they are also
more flexible. For example, with my 1160 and 3000 I can not only use the
MIS VM variable-mix/tone inksets, but I can also load MIS FS
(Piezo-compatible) inks into them and either use the Piezo driver or the
Epson driver. With hextone printers, you cannot use the Epson driver with
FS & Piezo inks.
So, for those who really want the smoothest prints from the MIS VM system,
the hextones have a bit of an edge -- but not enough that I care about it.
(Note that there is no set of MIS VM curves for the EX.) For FS or Piezo
output, the quads allow more flexibility and essentially equal output.
If my 1160 and 3000 got ripped off, I'd replace them with another 3000 &
1160. (Actually, I might go with the smaller version of the 1160.)

Subject: [Digital BW] New printer or not?
For B&W Printing with MIS inks what it is better, a photo 6 inks printer
(for now I have an old Epson EX) or a 4 inks one like the 1160?
May be a lot of guys asked the same thing but I read that 4 inks is
better and few lines later that dots are smallers with photo printers!
I am in trouble....
