Hi Jerry, I have found that somerset velvet -appears- to have a "good" black when the blacks in the image are small areas surrounded by much larger, much lighter areas..... snow scenes and branches against the sky, for instance. I didn't intend for this answer to replace the better tech answer that Paul can supply. Just thought it could help on a different level. I had a lot of s.v. on hand when I acquired some Hahnemueler Photo Rag, and was able to get some use out of using this approach.
