Daniel - There are many ways to go about using tape to connect the front 
and back pieces of mat board.  You can use your tongue to wet the linen 
tape, if you have enough saliva and don't mind the taste.  Or you can get 
a ceramic device that allows a small roller to sit in a small container 
with water in it; you then roll the tape over the roller, which wets it.  
You can often find these in catalogues from places like Light Impressions 
in Rochester, New York.  They and others also sell a self-adhesive tyvek 
tape which can be used for the same purpose, and which stays flexible 
longer than the linen tape will.  

In either case, I often use a clean cloth or a plastic wedge to press 
down on the tape after I've applied it to the board so that it makes the 
tape adhere well.  I also fold over the top board and make sure it 
squares up against the bottom board before the above procedure.
