Daniel,

Hinging is easy. Place backing board on a big, flat surface. Let's say for
example you are doing a vertical. Place the overmat on top of the backing
board, then "open" it the way you want it to, ie; at the top. Butt up the
edges and make sure they are at the exact same level. I use 4 ply mats and
they are slightly thinner than the backing board I use so I place something
flat under the mat to raise it up to the same level as the backing board. So,
now you are looking at the backing board (where the artwork will reside) and
the underside of the mat, which is butted up aginst the backing board and
touching where you want it to hinge. I hinge mine at the top. Get a cup of
warm water, cut the length of linen tape, about 1-2" shorter than the side
you are hinging. Leave it in the warm water to soften the nice , minty ,
smelling glue. 10 to 20 seconds is all it takes. Any more and the glue is
weakened. Pull it up out of the water and let excess water drip off, being
careful to not let the tape twist around on itself. Place the tape along the
entire length of the hinge and press down. Blot excess water off with a
paper towel. Let it set up for 10 - 15 minutes, then bring the over matt up
and over into its position on the backing board. The glue will not be fully
set and will be wobbly. That 's ok, just be careful. Center the mat and make
sure the sides are all flush all around. Place a clean piece of paper on top,
which covers the whole thing, then place a heavy object like a dictionary on
top to hold everything in place. Wait 30-45 minutes and presto, your finished
hinged mat and backing board, ready to mount the artwork on the backing
board. You can position the artwork easily by roughly placing it on the
backing board, closing the overmat, then gently sliding the artwork around
under the over mat until it is perfectly centered. Depending how you mount
your print, the final steps will vary. I use photo corners so it's just a
matter of opening the over mat, and holding the print so it doesn't move
while I place the corners. Hopes this helps.

David

Daniel - There are many ways to go about using tape to connect the front
and back pieces of mat board. You can use your tongue to wet the linen
tape, if you have enough saliva and don't mind the taste. Or you can get
a ceramic device that allows a small roller to sit in a small container
with water in it; you then roll the tape over the roller, which wets it.
You can often find these in catalogues from places like Light Impressions
in Rochester, New York. They and others also sell a self-adhesive tyvek
tape which can be used for the same purpose, and which stays flexible
longer than the linen tape will.

In either case, I often use a clean cloth or a plastic wedge to press
down on the tape after I've applied it to the board so that it makes the
tape adhere well. I also fold over the top board and make sure it
squares up against the bottom board before the above procedure.

Daniel,

With these sort of things there is the right way, the wrong way, and your way.

Here is my way.

1. lay the over-mat and mount board edge to edge.

2. Cut three inch strips of tape as needed. Shorter pieces are better than
one long piece. The tape doesn't need to go the full length IMO.

3. thoroughly wet the glue with a sponge - don't get the outside wet or it
will shrink unevenly when it dries.

4. when the glue is tacky press it in place.

5. burnish the tape with your finger or a dry cloth until it doesn't lift up.

6. fold the over-mat closed and weight it for a few minutes until the glue sets.

Another thing to consider is to not mount the print until the over-mat is
attached. This makes it easier to position the print in the window.

Daniel,

Here's something you can take a look at:

Re: [Digital BW] OT: Hinging an overmat/ foam-core?

2002-03-21 by DanielPérez

Thanks for all the tips guys. I was up 'till 4:00am,
but I got my print matted, framed and shipped this
morning.
BTW, does anyone have any comments on sealing a print
in a frame just hours after printing? I would have
let it sit longer, but it has to be at the gallery
tomorrow, so I over-nighted it this morning. I'm
printing on PhotoRag 308 w/ VM inks.
 Hope it'll be alright...

Also, do any of you frame w/out a foam-core backing?
I used to use it, but now I just use another piece of
mat board behind the mounting board. The new frames I
use are not very thick and don't have the room. Just
worried about warping of the board..

Thanks again,
  Daniel
