Re: [Digital BW] Ideas for shipping framed prints?

2002-03-29 by Andrew Eschbacher

Jerry,

I don't know Phil Borges but I do know several photographers that have done
and continue to do serious exhibitions. They may be well known in the
photographic community and they make a decent living but they are hardly
rich. In the case of traveling exhibits, it is the practice of the previous
exhibition site to pay for the shipping to the next exhibition site. The
shipping crates are most certainly reused and repaired if necessary. That
list of grants and donors at the bottom of a program pays for more than the
cost of program, the opening party and any advertising. The artist may
have also secured a grant or donation to pay for the initial packing and
shipping.

Lots of groups, companies, etc. support the arts, many in some not so
obvious ways. The money is there if you go and ask for it. I used to
volunteer for one of the local museums (it is a great way to meet single
women) and I was on a party committe or two. One of my duties was to get
soft drinks donated for some function. I was sweating the details (I was a
senior buyer for a large manufacturing company at the time and I was used
to being able to hold a big contract over a vendor's head whenever I needed
something). So I call up the local soda distributor, identify myself and
the function while fearing the worst and to my amazement not only did they
say yes but they fell all over themselves saying yes. All they asked was
credit in the program in the corporate sponsorship section and this was the
major distributor in town.
