DO NOT USE FedEx.. Use Airborne, UPS, Or the US Mail...

FedEx has Photos (even when you buy their insurance) on their list of
excluded items for recovery..

I would be careful about US mail, I can't verify it myself but I have heard
and read about those new scanning machines causing great harm to photographs
and I do have a friend in Government who had a letter returned from DC and
it had turned yellowish brown.

Congratz on the show, Roger. I'm no expert on packaging; you might look
for local firms that specialize in packaging and ask them.

But here's a suggestion on framing: while I prefer glass over plexi,
artists who ship prints to shows often opt for plexi to reduce risk of
breakage. You might consider this. But if you do use glass, use a
product called GlasGard to protect the edge of the glass from contact
with the metal frame.

http://www.frametek.com/html/products/Glasgard.html

It's easy to apply and really reduces breakage. If you do your own
framing, you'll find it in your wholesale catalogs; if you use a framer,
they'll know about it.

This topic was written about extensively not long ago on either this forum or the PiezoBW forum.

Search for Mark Tucker. He had an exhibition across country and needed to ship prints.

Is this true even at the $100 - $500 level? I'm wondering about
what's appropriate and practical at the print-exchange level in
exchanges in which FedEx is specified.

Do not use US Mail. I have seen several Express Mail packages that look
like they were run over by a truck. In addition, Express Mail packages that
I sent were almost always a day late...in spite of the guarantee...they also
never gave me any money back because of being late.

The majority of the prints we receive at the Palm Beach Photographic Museum
for our shows are shipped to us crated by truck or FedEx freight. The crates
are wood frames and plywood. The majority have vertical foam strips mounted
every 2-3 inches. The framed prints slip down into these slots. The result
is that they are separated and cushoned by the foam. The bottom of the crate
and top are lined with foam so as to add cushioning.

We now have approximately 6o of Phil Borges prints on display from his
Enduring Spirit show. They came in 5 crates with 12 framed prints in each.

Roger,

I send my prints in the same packing I get when I order mat board from Light
Impressions. I have some of that and a lot of frame corner protectors if you
need it. You ARE using plex glazing ???

Jerry,

Who knows, they don't tell me those things. ;-)
We get some pretty big exhibits, I am sure that the shipping costs run into
the thousands.

Re: [Digital BW] Ideas for shipping framed prints?

2002-03-29 by Andrew Eschbacher

Jerry,

I don't know Phil Borges but I do know several photographers that have done
and continue to do serious exhibitions. They may be well known in the
photographic community and they make a decent living but they are hardly
rich. In the case of traveling exhibits, it is the practice of the previous
exhibition site to pay for the shipping to the next exhibition site. The
shipping crates are most certainly reused and repaired if necessary. That
list of grants and donors at the bottom of a program pays for more than the
cost of program, the opening party and any advertising. The artist may
have also secured a grant or donation to pay for the initial packing and
shipping.

Lots of groups, companies, etc. support the arts, many in some not so
obvious ways. The money is there if you go and ask for it. I used to
volunteer for one of the local museums (it is a great way to meet single
women) and I was on a party committe or two. One of my duties was to get
soft drinks donated for some function. I was sweating the details (I was a
senior buyer for a large manufacturing company at the time and I was used
to being able to hold a big contract over a vendor's head whenever I needed
something). So I call up the local soda distributor, identify myself and
the function while fearing the worst and to my amazement not only did they
say yes but they fell all over themselves saying yes. All they asked was
credit in the program in the corporate sponsorship section and this was the
major distributor in town.
