Keith, All,
You can help me keep and eye on this issue. If the "Members" section should
ever become accessible to you please let me know. I cannot tell myself since
my access rights include this section. I would specifically have to go into
the group settings which is not something I do very often.
Even if you did have access to "Members" you should only see truncated
e-mail addresses. Only owners and moderators see the full addresses.
Remember that when you post to a Yahoo group those your posts are e-mailed
to those members who chose to receive posts by e-mail. In those messages
your full e-mail address is displayed. A truncated version is displayed in
the on-line posts.
Group owners and moderators do have access to, "Export List" and "Download
List" and can collect all the e-mail addresses of the entire membership in a
text file.
Here is a quote from the "Help" section of the "Members" page below.
Martin
Is it possible for a spammer to gather email addresses from Yahoo!
Groups?
* IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE PAGE.*
Yes, it is possible. We do everything we can to make this difficult to
do in an automated fashion, but if you use Groups, it is very likely that
others users will be able to see your email address.
What we do to protect your address:
Yahoo! Groups has built a system around the concept of preventing bulk
"harvesting" of email addresses. There are several protections in place:
a.. Non-members of a group never have access to the Members area.
b.. When members are given access to the Members area (a per-group
option set by the moderator), they can only see profile information you've
told us to display, and your truncated email address (e.g., "joe@x...").
c.. Message archives on the Yahoo! Groups web site display truncated
email addresses (e.g., "joe@x...").
d.. The Yahoo! Groups Abuse Team takes abuse complaints seriously
and will take action against abusers of the system.
Important information about protecting your address:
a.. Whever you join a group, your email address will be available to
the owner and moderators of that group.
b.. Whenever you post a message to a group, your email address will
be visible to those members of the group set to receive messages via email.
If you are concerned about your email address being known to other members,
we suggest you set up a special address for Groups using a service such as
Yahoo! Mail.
Despite the significant resources we have allocated to prevent abuse
of our system, spammers may eventually find ways to abuse our service.
Yahoo! Groups will continue to modify our site to prevent spam. Despite our
best efforts, some abuse may occur.
