Re: [Digital BW] Scanner comparison between Polaroid and canon...

2002-04-06 by Jerry Olson

Hi Bill,

How much are these scanners?

About a thousand each.

I think you know where I'm going with this- to get the detail in the deepest
shadow, you really need a drum scanner. I've seen Howtek 4000's on Ebay in
the 3-4K range. WAY too much, plus much to much hassle to work with them.

How many scans will you be making that have these deep shadows w/ detail?
Maybe the most difficult could be sent out for drum scans?

About 40 or so a month

One client refuses to shoot anything but velvia, even though I've told
him this is not a good choice for scanning. I don't make nearly enough
money in photography to get a drum scanner. I'm retired, so this is just
to earn extra money. It has to be between the $1000 canon and the $1195
Polaroid. Can't afford the Nikon right now, as I'm getting the Canon D60
next month.

I wouldn't even be getting a new scanner if mine hadn't developed
terrible noise in the shadows. Today was the first day I've ever seen
anything like it. like massive blotches and stripes in the shadows. It
doesn't happen with all slides, just ones that have large areas of
underexposed shadow detail in them. The canon 2710 FS Did not have this
problem before, but it costs more to fix it than it's worth.
