My scanner is dying, and I was wondering which you guys like best, the Polaroid Plus, or the new 4000 DPI Canon scanner. Both are about the same price. I need maximum dynamic range, to get all the detail in the deep shadows. Thanks! Jerry

Hi Jerry- My condolences... How much are these scanners? I think you know where I'm going with this- to get the detail in the deepest shadow, you really need a drum scanner. I've seen Howtek 4000's on Ebay in the 3-4K range. How many scans will you be making that have these deep shadows w/ detail? Maybe the most difficult could be sent out for drum scans? Hi Bill, How much are these scanners? About a thousand each. I think you know where I'm going with this- to get the detail in the deepest shadow, you really need a drum scanner. I've seen Howtek 4000's on Ebay in the 3-4K range. WAY too much, plus much to much hassle to work with them. How many scans will you be making that have these deep shadows w/ detail? Maybe the most difficult could be sent out for drum scans? About 40 or so a month One client refuses to shoot anything but velvia, even though I've told him this is not a good choice for scanning. I don't make nearly enough money in photography to get a drum scanner. I'm retired, so this is just to earn extra money. It has to be between the $1000 canon and the $1195 Polaroid. Can't afford the Nikon right now, as I'm getting the Canon D60 next month. I wouldn't even be getting a new scanner if mine hadn't developed terrible noise in the shadows. Today was the first day I've ever seen anything like it. like massive blotches and stripes in the shadows. It doesn't happen with all slides, just ones that have large areas of underexposed shadow detail in them. The canon 2710 FS Did not have this problem before, but it costs more to fix it than it's worth. Jerry

Jerry, You don't mention what negative sizes you want to scan but from the two models you mention I guess it is only 35mm. It sounds like the Polaroid Sprintscan 4000 Plus is an upgrade of the original 4000 model to bring the electronics up to the same level as the Sprintscan 120. I had the original version of the 4000 and I have the 120. They are both great for 35mm scans. I imagine the competing models from the other companies are also excellent. The quality to price ratio on 35mm film scanners seems like a pretty good deal at this point. One feature to really compare is the area of film carriers. Some are full frame and some are not. Some companies offer glass sandwich carriers and others don't. You can pay more and get better quality but you are paying more and more for less and less improvement. I have a used Howtek D4000 on the way that will set me back about $6,000 with all the extras. I got this primarily for my 4x5 negs. I may change my mind after I use it, but I would not have gone this route just for my 35mm. Right, and I'm not sure 3-4k is way too much either. Depends on condition, extras, and software. With Trident 4 and a couple of drums, you'd probably have to pay around 6k. -- Quentin --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@y..., "dickbo" <Dickbo@b...> wrote: > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Jerry Olson" <jerryolson@r...> > To: <DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@y...> > Sent: Saturday, April 06, 2002 3:22 AM > Subject: Re: [Digital BW] Scanner comparison between Polaroid and canon... > > I've seen Howtek 4000's on Ebay in > > the 3-4K range. Martin, does the polaroid or canon have glass 35mm carriers as an option? And I sure would not expect a thousand dollar scanner to cut any image area off when scanning! Both polaroid and Canon have had excellent reviews, but at the time I wasn't interested in a 35mm scanner, so I didn't pay attention to them. Jerry Martin Wesley wrote:

Dickbo, I'm afraid $1000 is my limit for a 35mm scanner. Jerry

Qdfb, Well, it's way too much for me! This is only for occasional scanning, not for a business! Jerry qdfb wrote:

Jerry, I looked them both up on their websites and I can't tell. I know the old Polaroid didn't have a glass carrier option and I bet the new one doesn't either. I have no idea about the Canon. As far as full frame, my Polaroid 120 seems to be about an exact fit for the 35mm negs from my Canon Elan II and Elan 7. I can get both sides if I am very careful with aligning the neg. Can't quite get full frame end to end but it would be pretty easy to cut out a cross bar or 2 if I needed too. An extra 1/2 mm would have been nice. Hopefully they have improved things with the new model but you never know. Any way to get to a dealer and take a look? Hi group. What about the minolta scanners. I have read good reports of them, specially the multi pro. Have someone any experience with it.
