David - I don't know if this will be helpful, but I have a Polaroid 
Sprintscan 120 also, and it came with LaserSoft's Silverfast and HDR 
software in addition to the others.  I vastly prefer it as a scanning 
software, having used it for a few years on an Epson flatbed scanner I 
have.  I also bought (as an upgrade) LaserSoft's Negafix, which is a 
useful addition to the software for scanning negatives.  My approach 
these days is to use Silverfast's 48-bit option to make what you would 
call a "raw" scan; I save that file as a tiff and then open it in HDR.  
Then, using HDR I make basic corrections to the file in what is 
essentially a prescan window, and convert to 24-bit by "scanning" the 
file in HDR.  I then keep the original large file as well as the 
converted one.

Even if you don't use that approach, you might consider Silverfast and 
Negafix.  It allows a greater degree of control in the prescan stage than 
do many other approaches.  For examples and info (as well as links to
