I once bought an 860 Epson tech shop manual, which also mantioned the 1160. There is special software which Epson tightly controls and doesn't let anybody but a certified tech center have. This software realigns the 1160/860 head when reinstalled. It needs windows 98 through an Lpt port to work. It reburns the E-Prom chips in the printer. There are about three different alignments it does. I'm about certain the 1280/1290 is similar. I know that MIS has a procedure that someone sent in posted on their site which advocates head removal as "okay". But this person did not buy a shop manual first when he came up with the idea. There are about ten pages plus devoted to head re-alignment with the software. It also allows you to reset the ink cleaning counter, which keeps track of how many cleaning cycles you do. After a large predetermined number of them, the E-Prom disables the printer, and it must be reset with this software. Jim H.
