RE: [Digital BW] OEM Ink Pricing & Tactics Invetigated by EU Anti-Trust Commissioner - Bulemic 7600/9600

2002-05-23 by Lloyd O'Daniel

I'm hoping that the 2200 will be like previous desktop designs with the
ink carts riding on the head. With 7 carts, I'm not sure they do. If so,
there should not be the high volume of ink or purge fluid required to
flush out the old ink as with the large printers. I haven't done it
myself, but I understand there are those who routinely swap CIS's or
carts with different inksets on small printers. This wouldn't be
feasible with the 3000 and up. So, I'm hopeful that the ink waste will
be greatly attenuated with the 2200. But I expect it to be all 7 colors,
because it serves Epson's purpose to make it that way. I'm also hoping
that Epson won't make up for the low ink waste of the 2200 by charging
$2/ml of ink, but that might be wishful thinking. Whether or not I buy a
2200 will depend on the cost of the carts and the number of prints per
set.

Since I have always used 3rd party inks and CIS's, I don't even have
Status Monitors installed for my 1200's. A friend of mine has a 2000P
and is constantly bemoaning ink cost and having to swap carts after
15-20 prints. He doesn't believe that the individual carts of the 2200
will be a big savings, since he says the 2000P colors all go at about
the same rate anyway. Buying 7 carts at once will probably be more
expensive than buying 2. Let's hope they last a lot longer.

Some farcical ad copy:

"EPSON introduces the EPSON Stylus Pro Bulimic 7600 and 9600.. Printers
that purge unnecessarily."

Anyone know if the 2200 suffers from Anorexia as well? Or does it purge

only the changed cartridge?
